What is "Christmas" ?

Here we are once again.  A week before Christmas and a fortnight before a whole new year.  I hope people stop and give a thought to the true relevance of this time of year.  Just because the Christians renamed a preexisting festival, many film mistakenly associate this time of year with the birth of Jesus.  Putting aside the issue of whether or not such a person ever existed, there is nothing in the Bible to suggest that he was born at this time of year.

The real festival is about celebrating the shortest day and the start of the trek back to the warmth of spring and summer.  We eat foods that have been preserved since the last harvest and celebrate having survived the first half of a season that still does kill the most vulnerable in society.

I hope people remembered the true meaning of what we now call Christmas and resist the message put forward by those who wish to pervert it for their own ends.

Winters Thoughts

At first the left was right,
And now the right is leftish also,
But the middle is always that,
Except on alternate Wednesdays.

The North is sometimes late,
Waiting for his friend the currents,
Who are in turn,
Notoriously bad time keepers.

When all is considered,
We come to one,
Inevitable conclusion,
This is true no matter what,
Even at Christmas.
